Iman Abraham’s Autobiography

Who am I?

Well, the short answer to that question is I’m still figuring that out. My name is Iman Abraham and I am 22 years old with a plan to host my own sports show one day.

I have had a lot a plans for my future which I have noticed tend to change the older I get.

The first plan I ever had was when I was five years old and I wanted to be a doctor. However, around 10 years old, I realized I was not a fan of blood so my plan changed. I then realized I had a passion for sports and more specifically golf.

So for most of my life, I planned to be a professional golfer and I took the steps that would put me in the position to reach my goal. I worked hard to get the opportunity to play collegiate golf at a division one level at an HBCU called Prairie View A&M University. I learned a lot playing golf and I got to meet an abundance of amazing people. I also was able to hear so many athlete’s stories on how they got to where they are now.

Playing for an HBCU really opened up my eyes to how many athlete’s stories have not been told. So my college coach at the time convinced to me join PVAMUTV. Which if it were not for him I would not have had the opportunity to find my true passion for journalism.

Going into that studio and joining the sports shows that they had really changed my life. I realized the importance of being able to tell stories and the impact they can have.

So during my time at PVAMUTV, I was able to create my show called Triple Threat which highlights women in sports. This show gave me clarity on what I wanted my future to be. It was not easy at the time to change my plan and no longer pursue being a professional golfer. However, I realized that for me the importance of sharing stories that are not always told and being able to have a platform to share these stories is more meaningful to me.

Making this decision made me realize that I want to focus on sports journalism. I wanted to learn more about the field I plan to be in, so that’s when I decided to look at graduate programs. My dad was actually the person that suggested I look into the Walter Cronkite program and I am glad he did.

Now I am a graduate student at Cronkite studying sports journalism. In my undergraduate degree, I mainly focused on broadcast so being in graduate school I have learned how to tell stories through writing. So taking this commentary class I hope to better my skills and become a better writer so that I can be an overall well-rounded journalist.

So Who am I? I would say that I am a woman in the world of sports who is following her passion and continues to learn and adapt to live a life that is fulfilling to me.
