My name is Anthony Sanchez. I was born and raised in Phoenix,Arizona and have continued to live here my entire life, but my heart and soul belongs to Tepic, Nayarit, México. I grew up in a Mexican household, so Spanish was my first language, but thanks to my cousins and neighbors, I was able to learn English before starting school. I have been a fan of sports my entire life, the two main ones that have always had my interest have been soccer and skateboarding.
I realized when I was 15 that I wanted my livelihood to be centered around sports, but journalism was not my first choice. After graduating high school, I went straight into ASU for sports business and immediately realized it was not what I wanted to do at all. I ended up leaving ASU for a while to get my prerequisites and try to figure out exactly I wanted to major in. I realized that I loved just talking about sports and talking about more in-depth topics within sports, so I decided to major in sports journalism when transferring back to ASU. Choosing Cronkite was an easy choice for me, it’s the closest school to home and didn’t require me to move out and spend more money that I don’t have. I found my way to this class because I wanted to improve more on my own personal writing. Just like we mentioned in class, Cronkite is all about talking about what’s in front of you and what needs to talk about.
With this class, I feel like it will improve me more as writer and help me improve in another aspect of journalism. Commentary will always be important because it helps not just tell a story butbuild one up as well. I’m hoping to come out of this class not just a better writer, but a more confident one. I want to be able to be proud of the work I’ve done and be able to present it without any fears. Personally, the major challenge in our industry is us journalist having to compete for jobs against retired established players. People are always going to want to hear from well-known players who have played the game rather than someone doesn’t have that same experience.
