Time and time again we hear of these athletes that have a fruitful career and when it ends they waste their money on meaningless things and make some questionable decisions.
While there are many individuals that fall short of being decent examples in the public eye, luckily this isn’t the case with Allan Houston.
While Houston struggled somewhat accepting that his career was over, he pondered over the words of wisdom that the legendary Michael Jordan imparted to him.
Jordan told him that when it comes to retirement, Houston would have to listen to his body and his body would tell him when to retire. When Houston’s body spoke up he listened and he called it a career.
Allan Houston was an individual who primarily focused on his Basketball career. He had such a passion for the sport and still does. His father Wade Houston is a big part of the reason why he loved the game so much.
He played in four final fours in Tennessee under his Dad and not only did it make him a better person but it made him a better player. He went on to play in the NBA for 12 years. While he played in the NBA, he played with the utmost passion and did not concern himself with being “the face” of a team or an organization.
Houston was concerned with being the best player he could be and that drive has translated over to the next chapter in his life.
While he never pictured becoming an executive of any kind in his life after basketball, he was looked at as someone who could step up in a roll of importance. Houston stepped up in front office roles.
He was assigned to player development and then the scouting department. He credits people’s faith in him in such important positions to his growing mindset.
Houston made it a point to say that who an individual is and what they can do is more important than what their skill set is. A skillset can always be expanded but who you are and how you think is a little harder to change.
Attributing his path of success to his faith in God, he sees his life as a blessing and as an opportunity. He has taken a great deal of time and devotion to raising his 7 children and being the best father figure he can be.
Houston feels that today’s youth lacks a lot of strong father figures that deliver good values and set good examples. That is why he founded his brand FISSL. FISSL stands for faith, integrity, sacrifice, leadership, and legacy.
These are all things that Houston takes pride in and wants the next generation to do the same. That is what is special about Allan Houston. He has lived his life with an attitude of gratitude. He has lived his life in service of others. Whether it is for the youth of America, his children, his office, or the Good Lord Houston gives it everything he’s got day in and day out.
Our society needs more individuals like Houston. People who care about the community, and future generations. Those who have the courage to take the high road and not try and get away with things because they can.
I don’t Allan Houston personally, and he has his flaws just like anybody else, but it’s the commitment he has to trying to display all said traits on a daily basis that we could learn from.
The truth of the matter is that Houston is right that now more than ever the youth does not have a whole lot of decent role models to look up to. We are living in an era in which we should be reminded that faith, integrity, sacrifice, leadership, and care for leaving behind a respectable legacy is important.
