It’s no secret that in life one will run into a vast number of twists and turns and they will go down a road that will lead them to an unexpected destination. The road of Kaitlyn Humphrey is no exception.
Humphrey grew up in Northern Colorado and while it was home, she felt out of place. In a small town in Northern Colorado Humphrey grew up around a plethora of different athletes, which most people would find that comforting and would even want to participate in.
This wasn’t the case for Humphrey. Humphrey did not enjoy sports and was not good at them. She did not have the stamina or the skill to excel at sports.
More importantly she didn’t enjoy them and knew that there was something bigger and better for her beyond the horizon.
While the feeling of inadequacy loomed over her as her friends made varsity teams and went on to compete in state championships she made a commitment to herself to find her passion.
When people asked her what she wanted to be in her future she would say she wanted to be well known. After watching shows like Hannah Montana and listening to Artists like Dolly Parton she started to build an affinity toward music.
Her Dad, a Texas native who according to Kaitlyn could play any song without a sheet of music was also a big reason why she started to take steps toward music. After her Dad tried to get her brother in it and failed she became the next in line. She struggled at first with it, but then by the time she got to High School she actually became quite good at it.
She had the opportunity to be the opening act for some of the artists she heard on her local radio stations and sing at local old-folk homes. She felt a strong connection to music and that led to something.
Through her love of music she developed a love for connecting with people. She loved performing in front of people and relating to people. She enjoyed performing on the biggest of stages.
When she started her collegiate career she told herself whatever she was going to pursue, she needed to replicate that high for herself.
The chase to find that thrill was not a very long one, as soon as she started college she found journalism. In particular, broadcast journalism has become her true passion.
It exhilarates her, gets her out of bed in the morning and creates that same high in when she was performing on stage. Humphrey claims that it fits her personality beautifully.
She claims that broadcast journalism creates the same feeling in her that music did. She enjoys the bright lights and being in pressure situations.
Humphrey has an addiction for high pressure situations. Most of all she loves to connect with people and that is what she likes about journalism. Humphrey may have struggled with finding her passion for a while, but she found it and it is rare for someone to find their true passion and be able to do it. She is one of the lucky ones.
After speaking with her and learning about her journey I like many of the readers are very surprised and taken aback with her story.
Think about it. If you were a betting persona wouldn’t you have picked her to stay in music?
She’s exceptional at it, she’s had big opportunities but the more you examine her story the more you see that she is a true journalist.
Journalists tell stories and a lot of times they tell stories of people whose stories aren’t told. The ability to connect to people is almost a prerequisite to be an effective journalist and Kaitlyn Humphrey has that ability.
There are a lot of lessons one can take away from the story of Kaitlyn Humphrey.
I started off this article by saying that in life, you may think you know where you are going but the truth is you don’t. Kaitlyn Humphrey’s story should inspire people to follow their passion because they never know where it might lead them.
Being open to things in life pays off, people shouldn’t limit themselves into thinking they should just be one thing because a lot of times you might not be meant to do that one thing. You might be meant to be something else and enjoy it.
In life, we are all trying to find ourselves and some might take longer than others and that’s ok. Enjoy your life and enjoy the ride. Kaitlyn is enjoying hers so should the rest of us.
I urge my readers to follow their heart, gut and passion to find what it is you really love to do. It might not be what you pictured and that’s ok, it doesn’t need to be.
There is a fruitful path out there for everyone; you just have to be willing to find it and follow it.
