Classmate Interviews

William Osborne is a passionate sports journalist from Woodland Hills, California. He’s always been a massive fan of sports since he was little, playing baseball, soccer, basketball, football, flag football, tennis and field hockey.

Although he’s played several sports, he eventually narrowed down his list of sports to just football. In 2014, Osborne joined the football team upon entering Oak Park High School. He was an impact player on special teams until having a brutal injury that led to his demise in football. A bursitis injury in his right knee prevented him from bending it for a few months. After coming to terms with his athletic abilities not being enough to keep competing, Osborne found his new niche, sports journalism. This has always been an interest of his, considering his love for sports.

He quickly dove in during his high school career, joining the school newspaper, writing compelling stories, and running a podcast. The newspaper was named Oak Park Town, and Osborne was structured enough to establish a digital presence for them. He hosted podcasts that he turned into compelling stories.

He eventually went on to be their social media manager. Osborne learned about Arizona State and their journalism program at Walter Cronkite during his high school years. After diving deeper into the program, he knew he wanted this to be his new home to thrive as an upcoming journalist. However, he did not attend Arizona State after graduating from Oak Park. Instead, he went to Moorpark College, a community college near his hometown. Osborne went there to save money. COVID came along soon after, which affected his grades, but he didn’t let that steer him too far left. The grit he displayed during this time was unbelievable. COVID was a tough time for everyone, but Osborne still found a way to maintain his grades while reporting for Moorpark’s women’s soccer team as well.

His vision of himself attending the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication surpassed all the adversity he faced. The sports journalist is finally an undergraduate at Arizona State, where he’s now learning how to maintain his school work while also having an internship at Sports360AZ.

It’s tough to balance as his schedule is strenuous, but nonetheless, he pushes himself to excel in both.

He has career aspirations of being a beat reporter for a sports team. His ideal situation would be reporting for an NBA or college basketball team, but he thinks of himself as a sponge that can soak up any sport instead of limiting himself to one sport. Besides his love for basketball and being a beat reporter for a team eventually, Osborne’s dream is to produce a late-night comedy show for sports, which is such a unique idea. It would essentially be a show clowning athletes on funny events in the sports world, like the infamous Draymond Green and his skeptical actions on the basketball court. Osborne is on his way to becoming an exceptional person in this world. He has been building the foundation along with setting high expectations for himself.

Hopefully, it will all pay off one day, and we will see that late-night comedy show on one of the most extensive sports networks.
